Cheviot Ram Sale

A great show of sheep was more than matched with a fantastic trade at the annual sale of Hill Cheviot rams at Lockerbie on October 7th 2002.

The sale's overall average almost doubled on the previous sale in 2000. The top price of £10,500 came mid-way through the sale for the first of the shearlings from Robert and Roy Weir, of Townfoot, Thornhill for a son of the consistently good breeding Beck's Favourite, out of a ewe by a home-bred sire.

Just £500 short of matching the breed record the sheep sold jointly to Sandy Fleming, of Hislop, Hawick, and Jim Robertson, of Becks, Langholm. Robert and John Paton, of Castle Crawford, Biggar, sold the next highest priced of £10,000.

Sired by the £7,000 home bred Castle Knowledge, the ram was sold to Becks and Norman Douglas, of Catslackburn, Yarrow. The Patons sold a ram by Stirkfield Impression at £6,000 to David McGarva, of Granton, Moffat.

Another of their sheep made £5,000 for a two shear by Unthank Lucky Strike to Finlay Smith, of Biggar. Tim Elliot, of Hindhope, Jedburgh, achieved a lifetime best with a top of £8,500 for a son of Hislop Escort which sold to Castle Crawford.

The supreme champion from Norman Douglas, sired by Winterhope Rocket, also went to Castle Crawford for £8,000.

The sale's overall average for 315 shearlings was £978.35 compared with the last sale in 2000 of £472.94 for 378 shearlings.
