South Country Cheviot tups sold well at Lockerbie on Monday, with averages remaining similar on the year, levelling out at £1598.81 (+£23.74) for 379 sold, with a clearance rate of 93%.

Father and son duo Craig and Stuart Weir, Mainside, Hownam, achieved a flock personal best of £20,000 when topping the South Country Cheviot annual ram sale at Lockerbie. Sired by Glendinning Goliath, who goes back to Potholm Flash, this two-shear ram was the overall reserve champion on the day, judged by James Cochrane, shepherd at Castle Crawford, and sold to Robert and Alistair Warden of Skelfhill, Hawick.

On the flip side, Skelfhill also produced the goods, also achieving a flock personal best, when selling their third in the ring, and overall champion for £18,000. This two shear that sold to Castle Crawford, is by Kale Dynamite. Preceding this was the consignment's first in the ring, by Stirkfield Captain, that sold to W J Douglas & Son, Upper Hindhope, Jedburgh for £11,000. A Townfoot Showman sired boy then went on to make £8000, the final bidder being Ian McKnight, Dalhabboch, Newton Stewart.

Skelfhill were behind the breeding of Jim Robertsons's Becks, Langholm sale leader at £14,000. A son of the £10,000 Skelfhill Sovereign that was purchased in 2022, this sold to Allan and Billy Common, Crossdykes, Lockerbie. Hindhope Jackpot, the breed record that is shared with Crossdykes was the sire of Beck's third in the ring, selling to £7000 to John Paton, Castle Crawford. Matching this and continuing a magnificent trade for the Beck's flock was a son of Eskdale Hit and Run that sold to Morag & Blair Cockburn, Stirkfield, Biggar. A Becks Sensation son, that goes back to the £4200 Mainside Yielder purchased in 2019, was knocked down at £6000 and sold down to Wales with Arfon Pugh, Harlech, Gwynedd.

Becks and Crossdykes went into a half-share to purchase Norman and David Douglas's second in the ring for their Catslackburn consignment, a shearling at £10,000 who had stood reserve champion Southie at Peebles this year. Both buying back their breeding, the sire was Crossdykes Talisman who himself sold for £10,000 at Lockerbie in 2023, who goes back to Becks Quicksilver. Immediately following this was a son of the £12,000 Tweedshaws Rocket (Southie champion at the Highland in 2024), that went to Fintry with Ewen MacMillan, Lurg for £9000.

Matching this price of £9000 was George Irving's Mountbenger entry, sired by Sundhope Odyssey. Brought out by full-time shepherd John Allan, this was the seventh in the ring for the consignment, with the Hume family of Sundhope buying back some of their own genetics.

Despite being second-last in the ring, Crossdykes sold to success, with their first prize shearling making £9000, selling to Stirkfield, this being a son of Crossdykes Senator who has bred sons to £10,000. Stirkfield also bought the second in the ring from the Crossdykes consignment, going to £7500 for a Becks Top Gun son. The Common's sold their penultimate tup, a Castle Hurricane son, to Jim Wood, Potholm for £6000.

The third in the ring from the 850-ewe strong Stirkfield flock realised £7500 when selling to Catslackburn. This was a Glendinning Jings son, who goes back to to the £6500 Castle Gatecrasher.

Jedburgh sheep shearer and contract shepherd James Smith from The Burrows sold shearlings to £7000 for a son of Hindhope Ace, going to Syd Anderson at Easter Alemoor, Hawick.

Bob Rennie, Attonburn, made a successful debut with a two-shear tup sired by Crossdykes Spitfire. This also sold to £7000, going in a half-share to Sundhope and Eileen Randall, Drycleuchlea.
